This general timeline shows how the project will progress through different study phases. The Major Investment Study (MIS), now completed, established mode and general concept for needed improvements in the Eastern Corridor. The Preliminary Engineering/Environmental Impact Study (PE/EIS) phase, now in progress, takes the MIS Recommended Plan and develops and evaluates location-specific alternatives.

Part A of the PE/EIS work involves environmental field studies and evaluation of alternatives for each of the four transportation modes within a core study area. Projects identified in Part A will then be studied in further detail (preliminary engineering and environmental impact) during Part B, resulting in the development, by mode and project, of a preferred alternative and final environmental documentation.

Projects identified during Part B will then progress to detailed design and eventual construction. This unique stepped process will allow high-priority projects identified at the end of Part A to move forward into construction at an accelerated rate, while still accounting for all other planned actions in the Corridor. A "fully planned" picture will be the outcome of Part A.
