Environmental Stewardship

The Eastern Corridor contains a rich mix of man-made and natural resources. Variable topography, high quality streams, floodplain and groundwater resources, and developed communities all contribute to the aesthetic and environmentally important context of this part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Sensitive resources that require special consideration during project development include: the Little Miami River and other surface streams, wetlands, floodplains, aquifers, plant and wildlife resources, threatened and endangered species habitat, cultural historic and archaeological resources, air quality and noise.

Important community and environmental resources identified during Tier 1 are depicted below. Some of these resources have experienced change since this initial work was completed and this will be updated and evaluated during the current Tier 2 NEPA work.

 Drainage Area
 Soils
 FEMA Floodplains
 Aquifers
 Parks and Greenspace
 National Register of Historic Places
 Archaeology Sensitivity
 Potential Hazardous Materials Concerns

Consistent with commitments made in the Tier 1 EIS, the Eastern Corridor is moving forward with the development of a comprehensive, coordinated “green infrastructure” preservation, restoration and enhancement program that focuses on sensitive features, needs and opportunities. A green infrastructure framework for the Eastern Corridor, initially focused on the Little Miami River valley, was developed and presented in the 2005 Green Infrastructure Master Plan.  Through local landowner and stakeholder input, this planning effort identified community and resource priorities, as well as mitigation and preservation opportunities in the area. The green infrastructure plan will continue to be developed during Tier 2 to help refine alternatives for the Eastern Corridor and develop detailed mitigation.
